Identifying Roman Coins

Identifying Roman Coins
by Jacob Weasley

When trying to identify a certain coin, you must remember that some are easy to do while others may be too far gone for it. In the end it really depends on the condition of the coin.

The most important feature of identifying Roman coins is making sure the inscription is legible. Often parts will be worn off, but as long as the damage is not too bad you should be able to work with it. This is made easier by the fact that the letters in the Roman alphabet are all in use in English today, so you don’t have to worry if you’ve interpreted the character right, because they are all familiar. One potential pitfall here is that certain letters can resemble others. They are not very large and somewhat worn, so you have to make sure you are looking carefully.

It also helps to look at the picture of the ruler on the coin before beginning major research. A lot of times someone who has been doing this for awhile can identify the ruler on a coin simply by recognition. You should remember though that this technique should only be used as a guide and not necessarily as the final decision. For actually making the call on the identification of a coin you’ll need to combine all of its aspects and make a decision.

Along with this point is the idea that Roman coins changed their styles through the years. Early on you tend to see much larger coins, while the later ones often seem smaller and more detailed. Recognzing these changes can save you a lot of time because you will already know what catagory your coins are in so you can target your research.

The simplest way to identify your coin is to search for any of the characters that you were able to read off of the coin. You need to use an online database and the best one is at http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/findstr.html. Enter any of the information you have in that search and it will tell you if that line appears anywhere in their records. This can often lead to a lot of choices, but it definitely helps narrow down the field. From here on out you can use visual references to narrow down your search.

When you finally identify your coin it is a rewarding experience. You are no longer holding a random piece of metal, but a coin that represents a period in time and a the reign of an individual. This makes the hobby and the coins themselves infinitely more interesting and significant.

Ebay is one of the most popular places to find and buy collectibles on the internet today. Collectible shopping used to be limited to estate sales and antique shops, but with eBay the options have really opened up. The commercials always say the place to buy and sell everything, and the really mean it. You might think they don’t have the collectibles you’re looking for, but they really do have everything.

Your imagination is the only limit when it comes to shopping on eBay. In addition to the wide selection in the Collectibles and Antique categories there are the Unusual and Oddity categories, where you can find anything from old candy dispensers to haunted shoes. If your collection is of the more traditional style, a stamp collection for example, never fear there is an entire category dedicated to exactly what you’re looking for.

A short ten years ago or so it was quite a chore to track down all the pieces of collectibles sets. You might be scouring estate and yard sales every weekend. But, with eBay’s auction technology you can shop for every piece you need from the comfort of your own home in your pajamas. It’s never been easier to build a complete collection of anything from McDonald’s toys to milk glass d?cor, and even the newly popular Nascar racing collectibles.

Not so long it was a huge chore to go after the final pieces to any set of collectibles. Perhaps you inherited your grandmother’s set of milk glass collectibles, and only two pieces were missing from the matching set. You could spend literally years hunting garage sales, yard sales, and estate sales and never find those last two pieces. Now, with eBay, the world’s largest auction site you can hunt down those few pieces in a short period of time and probably even get a bargain price too.

Authentic Memorabilia Autograph Dealer Mark Turgeon Biography

Author: Mark Turgeon - Categories: hobbies - Tags:
by Mark Turgeon

My first autograph was from Dave Winfield of the New York Yankees. I was eight years old. I had never met anyone famous before and after that day, Dave felt like a hero to me.

Collecting sports cards was one thing but to actually get them signed was another. I have always played sports my whole life and as a kid, I loved watching all kinds of sports: Red Sox, Mets, Yankees, Bruins, Rangers, and Celtics etc. But I would have to say; I enjoy the sport of Hockey the most from playing it and cheering on my favorite team the Hartford Whalers. My Autograph days officially started in Hartford, CT. I was a huge Whaler fan and would attend most home games and get autographs from the Whalers and the visiting teams.

For seven years between the ages of 10 through 17, I collected NHL autographs. I met pretty much every hockey superstar that was in the league at the time, which included names such as Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Sergei Fedorov and much much more. My collection of hockey autographs were signed pucks, photos, sticks, jerseys and more.

After the Hartford Whalers moved to North Carolina to become the Carolina Hurricanes, I began to have a great interest in collecting music autographs. I met many bands such as U2, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, that have toured throughout Connecticut, New York, Boston, and even Canada.

I love all music from Rock, Pop, Blues, Rap, Folk, Jazz, International, and Country. I believed in the various artists from these genres and always had an interest of obtaining autographs from them.

I still get that same rush I used to get as a kid, only now I sell some of the items I obtain as a supplemental income. To learn more about me and to view my authentic Rock n? Roll signature exemplars, please visit www.sharkstreasures.com.

As of today, I currently live in beautiful Southern California and still continue to work with the best collectors and professional photographers in the Entertainment business. Throughout the years I have obtained thousands of signatures in sports, music, celebrity and along with some political. I have built a database of authentic signature exemplars and able to determine if an autograph is authentic or fake, based on collecting experience and cross comparisons. The market is loaded with fake autographs and it is really disgusting, because some people just don’t care. An autograph to me is a true memory or an artifact that should be well preserved for the future generations.

I have recently decided to finish my college degree at California State University Northridge studying Geography. No matter what my future holds, I’ll probably always be out there getting autographs on the side. Autograph collecting has been a hobby of mine for about 17 years. Nothing beats the anticipation, the excitement, and the stories that come out of those autograph nights. All the Best Mark Turgeon

Buying Tips for Purchaing Authentic Autographs Listed on eBay.

by Mark Turgeon

eBay is the world’s largest online auction website that offers thousands of autographs for sale everyday. When buying autographs on eBay how do we know if they are legit. Here are a few tips below to help guide you on purchasing your next autograph on eBay.

I. Check out the seller’s about me page to see what they are all about.

II. Check out the Sellers’s feedback score and past auctions of autographs they have sold.

3. Take a look at the seller’s current auctions and the prices of some of their items. If they are selling a Bob Dylan autograph for very cheap, its mostly likely fake.

4. Check to see if the seller is listings as private. When a seller sells something listed as private they are hiding something. Fake autographs are what they are hiding and these seller’s are afraid other people within eBay that will contact these buyers of their fake autographs and tell them they are not legit. This would totally ruin the seller’s reputation.

5. Find a dealer that is honest and has nothing to hide like private listings. Also an honest dealer has great feedback with complete openness of honesty within his auctions, about me page, feedback and prices of items.

6. You should always do research on the autograph you tend to buy. Make sure you know what it looks like and find authentic signatures to do a comparison of the one on eBay being offered.

There are many good guys out there or should I say Authentic Autograph dealers. These dealers have nothing to hide and offer their complete openness of honesty to the world.

Among many, coin collecting is a highly loved activity. Whether as a hobby or a serious investment, collectors derive much pleasure from it. Investors’ long term goal is to profit off their coins, and for that reason, they focus only on the most valuable items.

No matter why the collector chooses coins as his activity, they will become engaged in an activity that will consume much of their time and effort for years to come. New collectors will soon realize that there are potentially millions of coins that they could be collecting. Coin collectors could chose to collect Statehood Quarters, international coins, rare coins and limited edition coins. When collecting, many people choose only to focus exclusively on the items that have some value.

It is because of this that the coin collectors can have such a difficult time finding the coins they are after - rare and limited edition coins are indeed very rare. Always consider the first point of the hobby - purchasing. With coin collecting, the key is to fully understand exactly how to expand your collection with valuable coins. Many coin collectors boost their collection’s worth through dealing with professional coin dealers, though the internet and online auctions also help a great deal.

Many new coin collectors are then confused about which valuable coins they should buy. Of course, this is why coin collecting software can help by performing one simple task. That is, to make it easy to for coin collectors to use.

Of course, as with most software, many people immediately want to know how expensive it will cost them. It is certainly true that you can find and download free coin collecting software, if you are not looking to have a program with a large degree of functionality. What many free software offers is a list of potential coins for coin collectors. The only organizational tool they offer is the ability to check off a coin once it has been added to your collection. The use of a paid program will only set you back for somewhere less than one hundred dollars and offers more benefits than a free one.

The coin collecting software has been made to fit the styles of hobbyists and professionals, and both seem to consistently be content with their purchase. Many people opt to go with the professional programs because they provide one very valuable tool that the free ones do not, which is the value of the coins themselves. These values are often updated and kept current, as many paid for programs include automatic updates.

As previously mentioned, coin collecting software, especially paid software, can benefit both coin hobbyists and professional coin collectors. Many people remain unsure about this decision, until they actually explore the possibilities that exist in this software. As many coin collectors begin unsure, they spend time finding out what’s available through online research, and are glad they did.
